Finally, finally, summer vacation is over!! Everyone, great job. This summer, we traveled with our child who has wheat and egg allergies to Okayama, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi. When you think of Hiroshima, you think of momiji manju and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki!! It seems like a high hurdle for a child with wheat allergies, but we had a great time!! Let me introduce it to you!!
As usual, our family traveled by car. We headed from Shizuoka to Hiroshima and made a brief stop in Okayama. The reason is that there is Dagashi store in Okayama that I really wanted to visit!! Dagashi is Japanese cheap sweets.
Nihoniti no Dagashi uriba (The Best Japanese cheap candies store in Japan)
It’s a store as big as ten tennis courts. This store is Japan’s largest Japanese cheap sweets store.
Although many candies contain wheat or eggs, this store is filled with a wide variety of Japanese candies, including many that are free from both. We were able to buy something and had a lot of choices!! I gave each child 1000 yen to spend freely, and they enjoyed shopping on their own. Of course, I also had a lot of fun and ended up buying quite a lot…
After the detour in Okayama, we arrived in Hiroshima.
We stayed for two nights and, as usual, booked a room with a kitchen via Airbnb. Since we prioritize cleanliness, it was well cleaned and nice. However, we had a little mishap when we arrived and discovered there was no rice cooker!! We ended up buying pre-cooked rice at a convenience store. Fortunately, we managed to have the first night’s dinner in the room with SASHIMI and TONJIRU(pork miso soup)from a supermarket .
Nowadays, there are pre-cooked TONJIRUsoups available everywhere, so we used one of those. This time it was a vegetable-rich tonjiru from Towa Shokusai (microwaveable pouch).
Ingredients: Vegetables (daikon radish, potatoes, carrots, onions, burdock root, green onions), pork (domestic, Canadian), rice miso, konnyaku, mixed fish extract, kelp extract, bonito extract, pork extract, dried bonito powder, seasoning (amino acids, etc.), calcium hydroxide (for konnyaku), antioxidant (Vitamin E), (contains mackerel, soybeans, and pork)
For dinner and breakfast the next day, we did our shopping at a supermarket in Hiroshima called Ark, and to our surprise, we found frozen rice flour takoyaki in the frozen food section!!
Ingredients: Rice flour (domestic production), cabbage (domestic), octopus, sugar, salt, Japanese-style dashi powder / processed starch, leavening agent, stabilizer (xanthan gum), (contains soybeans)
We had it for breakfast!! It was such a delight to start the day with it!!
On the second day, we went to Miyajima. To be continued in Part 2.
